About the Program

The environmental and sustainability challenges that we face today and in the future are huge. You’ve probably seen them in the news—more extreme weather events, droughts, wildfires, and sea level rise as a result of human-caused climate change. And who could forget other issues like plastic pollution, poor air and water quality, burning fossil fuels, and the loss of global wildlife? Environmental problems have no easy solutions. Failing to act fails us all, and worse, fails historically excluded and underserved communities the most. Our decisions today will impact our choices tomorrow - and so we invite you to do as Mahatma Gandhi once said, and be the change you wish to see in the world.
The B.A. in Environmental Sustainability program prepares you to take on the complex sustainability challenges of the future at every level of society. As an Environmental Sustainability major, you'll be immersed in three areas: environment, society and policy
Our major requirements provide students with core environmental science courses, and the flexibility to tailor their upper-level major requirements to their specific interests and career goals, which includes courses in:
  • government, policy, and international affairs
  • law and philosophy
  • business and economics
  • sociology/anthropology
  • any combination of those listed above.
As a part of the ENVS 490 capstone course, students in their junior and/or senior year design and complete a capstone project on a sustainability topic of their choosing. Students also have the opportunity to earn credit toward their degree by gaining on-the-job experience in off-campus internships.

Graduates of the Environmental Sustainability program have gone on to work in a wide variety of environmental fields, such as:
  • environmental consulting, compliance and permitting
  • law school (UBalt graduates may be eligible for Automatic Admission to UBalt School of Law)
  • local, regional and national nonprofit organizations (e.g., Blue Water Baltimore)
  • local, regional and national government (e.g., Baltimore Office of Sustainability)
  • education
  • environmental and industrial hygiene
  • graduate programs in environmental science, microbiology, geographic information systems, public health and public administration.
