About the Program
For ambitious students hoping to innovate, create, and help solve the problems of the twenty-first century, Interdisciplinary Studies assists them by opening their eyes to the need for multiple expert perspectives at the problem-solving table. Journeying through (or completing) three courses of study will show you that the best solutions often combine different perspectives. Future business and public-sector leaders know how to guide a team of diverse thinkers, no matter the workplace. Twenty-first-century professions require you to be a flexible thinker and a top-notch communicator. This Bachelor of Arts program prepares you not only to meet those needs but to inspire colleagues in the process.
Working with a skilled adviser, you'll construct a cohesive program of study combining the traditional rigors of a liberal arts education with more professionally oriented disciplines. You'll choose three concentration areas from the university’s entire undergraduate portfolio of programs—including business, psychology, human services, digital communications, and much more.
You are encouraged to put together a thoughtful sequence of courses in each discipline that reflects the development and continuity of certain themes, methods or schools of thought.
Students must take four courses (minimum 12 credits) at the 300-level or above in each of three concentration areas. Those areas of individualized study may be drawn from any major or minor offered at The University of Baltimore as well as from disciplines not offered at The University of Baltimore with the approval of the IDIS program director or academic adviser. At least one of the three concentration areas (minimum 12 credits) must be taken in an arts and sciences discipline.

Important note: Students should not confuse the Interdisciplinary Studies program with various University course requirements that use the IDIS course code, such as IDIS 101, 301 and 302. The interdisciplinary studies major, in contrast, requires IDIS 305: Introduction to Interdisciplinary Studies and IDIS 497: Interdisciplinary Studies Portfolio, then draws on courses across the curriculum. Thus, the IDIS subject code includes interdisciplinary courses that are not specific to the major, some of which serve to meet General Education requirements.
