About the Program
As a student of philosophy, you will become disciplined in thinking, perceptive in discerning issues, articulate in stating problems and open to the thinking of others. Towson University’s program, with a pluralistic and student-centered approach, emphasizes the history of philosophy and the diverse social and cultural settings from which philosophy develops, to which it speaks and with which it interacts. A diverse range of courses are offered, including new interpretations and new schools of philosophy.
Through coursework, you will develop and practice analytic and dialectical skills. The sound, clear and systematic thinking that philosophy emphasizes makes this major relevant to all disciplines. Furthermore, it fosters reflection, a prerequisite for leading a good life. The major prepares you to be a critical and creative thinker with a global vision. Join department alumni who have attained positions in finance, marketing, insurance, law, medicine and graduate school.
Social Justice Track
Students can pursue a course of study that emphasizes social justice. This optional track retains requirements in logic, history, and non-western philosophy, expands requirements in ethics and social/political philosophy, and includes an interdisciplinary component.
