About the Program
The Department of Modern Languages, Linguistics, and Intercultural Communication (MLL) offers students an innovative, multi-disciplinary program with a triple focus: language, literature and society. Courses are offered in Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Japanese, Russian and Spanish, as well as linguistics and intercultural communication. Students can major in French, German, Russian, Spanish, a combination of any two of these languages, language and cultural studies or applied linguistics.
Students of Russian participate with students of other languages in a common core of three courses that stress linguistic and cultural analysis. So aside from acquiring a proficiency in Russian and a knowledge of the culture of Russia and the former Soviet Union, they also learn about the dynamics of languages and cultures in general.
The MLL department emphasizes the importance of living and studying abroad. MLL faculty advise French, German and Russian students on programs abroad.
The department has an active council of majors, a linguistics club and several language clubs. Russian students can participate in a Russian chorus. Internships and community service projects are available. The faculty encourages and supports undergraduate participation in faculty research.
MLL graduates successfully pursue careers in law, medicine, education, social work, government and international business.
