Modern Languages, Linguistics, & Intercultural Communication, B.A. - Spanish Language Concentration

Program Transfer Guide
University of Maryland, Baltimore County

About the Program

The Department of Modern Languages, Linguistics, and Intercultural Communication (MLL) offers students an innovative, multi-disciplinary program with a triple focus: language, literature and society. Courses are offered in Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Japanese, Russian and Spanish, as well as linguistics and intercultural communication. Students can major in French, German, Russian, Spanish, a combination of any two of these languages, language and cultural studies or applied linguistics.
Spanish students join those of other languages in a common core of three courses that stress linguistic and cultural analysis. Therefore, an integral part of acquiring proficiency in Spanish language and knowledge of the cultures of Spain, Latin America, and Latinos in the United States, is learning about the fascinating dynamics of languages and cultures in general.
The MLL department emphasizes the importance of living and studying abroad. UMBC participates in two study-abroad programs in Mexico. In the Maryland in Mexico City program, students study at the Center for the Instruction of Foreign Students of the National Autonomous University of Mexico. The Maryland in Taxco Mexico program is a six-week, six-credit intensive Spanish language program offered every summer at the Taxco campus of the Center for the Instruction of Foreign Students of the National Autonomous University of Mexico.
The department has an active council of majors, a linguistics club and several language clubs. Internships and community service projects are available. The faculty encourages and supports undergraduate participation in faculty research.
MLL graduates successfully pursue careers in law, medicine, education, social work, government and international business.
