About the Program
The study of philosophy teaches students to think logically and critically and to formulate and evaluate arguments. It also introduces students to traditional philosophical issues and provides an opportunity to read the works of some of the greatest thinkers in history.
Honors candidates and seniors are encouraged to take 400-level courses taught by research professors in their areas of expertise and research. Students can also join Philosophers' Anonymous, the undergraduate philosophy society that acts as a council of majors and represents the interests of the students to the department.
In recent years, graduates of the philosophy program have been admitted for graduate study in a wide variety of disciplines, including law, medicine and philosophy—professions that require analytic, conceptual and expository skills. Philosophy majors tend to do very well in these areas and to perform substantially better than average on graduate admissions tests, including those for law, business and medicine.
Students who want to pursue a master's degree in philosophy can apply to UMBC's combined bachelor's and master's degree program in applied and professional ethics, which can earn qualified students a bachelor's and a master's degree in as little as five years. The course of study, of special interest to students considering further work in health care, law, public policy or the life sciences links analytic and foundational studies in moral theory and applied ethics with the professional environment.
