About the Program
The B.A. in the Management of Aging Services is an interdisciplinary, pre-professional program that integrates the study of aging with human services and management content, providing students with the knowledge and essential skills for beginning a career in the aging services sector, whether in government, for-profit business or nonprofit organizations. An undergraduate degree in management of aging services provides students with an excellent background for employment in a wide range of fields including financial planning, policy analysis and design, advocacy and health care management and delivery.
The Erickson School of Aging Studies, established through a visionary gift from Erickson Communities' founder and CEO John Erickson, builds on existing strengths at UMBC in public policy, aging and health services research. With a focus on preparing leaders for the 21st century within aging services, housing and care, the school offers credit and non-credit educational programs and conducts research to address the pressing practical and policy issues of our nation's rapidly growing aging population.
The school's Center for Aging Studies is a hub for faculty, undergraduate, graduate and post-doctoral research activities on the policy and sociocultural dimensions of aging. The center is the administrative and intellectual home for currently funded research (exceeding $5 million) on such topics as long-term care quality, consumer direction and physician/older patient interactions and practice. Working synergistically with the doctoral program in gerontology, housed jointly at UMBC and the University of Maryland, Baltimore, the center has greatly increased the visibility of gerontological research at UMBC and in the community.
