About the Program

UMBC's English Departmental is a vibrant center for teaching, learning and research with two major tracks: the Literature Track, for the broad range and diverse traditions of literature written in English, and the Communication and Technology Track, for written and spoken communication and the new information technologies. The English minors feature literature, creative writing, journalism and professional writing. Every semester the English Department offers over sixty courses covering a broad range of topics in literature and literary theory, writing and composition theory, cultural studies, linguistics and communication.
Students in both tracks and the minors have opportunities to engage in research with faculty mentors, to intern as editors of the creative arts journal, Bartleby, and to pursue internships in journalism or other fields. Majors may apply to our active and flourishing Honors program.
Many careers are open to English majors. in the Greater Baltimore region alone, UMBC English graduates have succeeded as government administrators, business executives, editors and publishers, technical writers and journalists. Many English graduates teach at the primary, secondary and university levels. In addition, English graduates go into law, medicine, government, social work, public relations, advertising, law enforcement, foreign service and new media design. Recent graduates have enrolled in English graduate programs at such top schools as Indiana University, the University of Michigan, the University of Massachusetts, Cambridge University and Cornell University. 
The Literature Track provides a comprehensive overview of English and American literature, with strong emphasis on the development of student writing skills. Students in the track will be prepared for careers in such fields as education, business, law, journalism, publishing and public relations.
