About the Program
UMBC's history department fosters students' analytical and communication skills, broadens their perspective on the past and trains them to apply knowledge and analytical skills gained through the study of history for solving today’s and tomorrow’s most critical issues. The Department of History offers a Bachelor of Arts in History, minors in history and East Asian history and an accelerated B.A./M.A. program.
Students majoring in history enhance their classroom experience in numerous ways. For example, some collaborate with faculty on research projects and publications. Internships with organizations such as the Maryland Historical Society, the Maryland State Archives in Annapolis, the Baltimore Museum of Industry, the Smithsonian Museums, as well as other institutions engaged in historical research in the Baltimore/Washington region are a good way to earn academic credit and hands-on experience. In addition, all history students are encouraged to participate in the Student History Council (SHC). The SHC meets monthly for lectures and informal discussions, sponsors field trips to museums and historic sites and helps students evaluate job opportunities and careers. Qualified history majors may also apply to Phi Alpha Theta, the history honor society.
The history major and minor are excellent preparation for careers that involve research, writing and analytical thinking such as government service, K-16 education, public history, communications and management, business and marketing, law, and for entry into graduate and professional programs.
Students planning to become certified to teach history and social studies pursue a specially designed course of study approved by the Maryland State Department of Education. This program, offered in conjunction with UMBC's secondary teacher education program, offers teacher certification in more than 30 states.
