About the Program
UMBC offers a B.A. degree in Economics and a B.S. degree in Financial Economics. The Department of Economics and Financial Economics offers programs of study in international economics, pre-business and pre-professional studies in accounting. A major in economics is excellent preparation for employment in business or government, including business management and public administration, or for graduate study in economics or law.
Economics draws on history, philosophy and mathematics to confront topics ranging from how households or businesses can make solid decisions to societal issues such as unemployment, inflation, crime and environmental decay. Financial economics focuses on financial markets and topics ranging from financing of corporations and government, to the pricing of financial assets such as bonds, stocks, derivative securities and real estate assets. Some graduates of the UMBC economics program enter the business world immediately after graduation while others earn an M.B.A. and then enter management positions. Research jobs are also available in business or in government service at the local, state or federal levels.
The department is small enough for plenty of one-on-one attention from faculty. Students in the department also support each other through the Political Economy Club. The club brings economics majors together for job seminars, visits to local businesses, social events and an annual awards banquet. The campus also has a chapter of Omicron Delta Epsilon, the international honor society for economics students.
