Program Transfer Guide
St. Mary's College of Maryland

About the Program

St. Mary's College of Maryland encourages students to complete their Associate of Arts or Associate of Science prior to transferring to St. Mary's College of Maryland. Students who do not complete their Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree must complete the LEAD General Education package as listed below.

Chemistry majors develop a fundamental understanding of basic principles, concepts, models, and practices employed by chemists in characterizing the structure and behavior of matter.

The chemistry major is structured to ensure that this fundamental knowledge is based on experiences that include the four major divisions of chemistry (analytical, inorganic, organic, and physical). The chemistry program is designed to foster development of an understanding of (1) the nature of the underlying scientific processes employed in the acquisition of chemical knowledge, (2) the application of current principles and modern practices used in solving chemical problems, (3) the current state of chemical knowledge, and (4) the applications of the concepts of chemistry in addressing societal needs. The program is particularly well-suited to prepare students for careers in chemistry or related areas and for admission to graduate, medical, or other professional schools.

Note: Most courses at St. Mary's College of Maryland are worth 4 credits.  Students will only receive the amount of credits at St. Mary’s College of Maryland that they received at their Sending Institution. For example, if your previous college/university says Introduction to Psychology is worth 3 credits, you will only receive 3 credits for Introduction to Psychology at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. The transfer courses worth 3 credits will still be applied to meet specific course requirements within the SMCM majors.
